Book Review: The Mindful Day by Laurie Cameron

“Be here now.” What seems like a cliche now was my mantra about 15 years ago. I would constantly remind myself to be mindful and to take in what was going on in the present, not what may or may not go on at some point in the future. When I was given the opportunity to review The Mindful Day by Laurie Cameron, I was excited. Following my bout with postpartum depression this past year, I figured I could stand to benefit from revisiting the concept of mindfulness. Plus, with four kids, and three of those kids under the age of five, anything that promises energy-building is welcome.

Cameron takes readers on a journey – she points out the ten qualities of mindfulness, including “Beginners Mind” and “Equanimity.” She talks about prioritizing work relationships, mindfulness while showering, visualizing positive interactions, clearing the home, and opening oneself to grief. Each chapter ends with a step-by-step list of how to embrace the sorts of practices she’s talking about, meaning that the reader learns to become more present in everyday life.

The Mindful Day is a great resource for those who are getting started in their journey with Eastern traditions and positive psychology. It’s accessible to those with no previous background in these fields, and it’s a great way to re-focus on the here and now and not the “what-ifs” of everyday life.
