Oh Butterick, Your 2015 Spring Collection is Here

So, Butterick announced the release of their 2015 spring pattern collection on Monday evening. It’s…mixed. I think the biggest problem I have with it is that they used some of the dowdiest fabrics to showcase what might otherwise be a good collection. I found myself looking at the line drawings to really figure out what was going on on some of them. There are some patterns I really like, but there are a lot I either won’t bother with because they make me yawn or that are just downright terrible. Let’s start off with the bad this time.

Spring 2015 Butterick patterns I’ll pass on

And the ugliest, worst, most “What were they thinking” pattern award goes to Butterick 6170. B6170, Misses' Tunic

With the necklace she’s wearing, this looks like what I’ll call “Surgeon chic.” I mean??? It does look like operating scrubs, right? Particularly in that color, with the accessories. I can’t see someone working on a patient wearing those heels though. I honestly don’t understand this look. Some of the other views in this pattern are better…but by all that much.

Then, we have the upside down calla lilly…er top. Butterick 6172.

B6172, Misses' Top and Tunic

I don’t know. I’m not really sure what to say about it. It’s…got a tail.

That is all.

I’m also convinced that Connie Crawford doesn’t talk to many plus-sized women about what we’d l ike to wear. It’s certainly not the worst thing I’ve ever seen, but Butterick 6186 is not the most…flattering thing either. It’s very tent-like. Now, maybe it’s the fabric creating that effect…but either way, it’s just kind of meh.

B6186, Misses'/Women's Dress

Just when you’re feeling bad about pants fitting woes, Butterick 6171 comes along with the promise of not having to do anything other than tie knots to make your fabric fit you like a tarp.

B6171, Misses' Tunic

Oooh…flattering…it’s a giant scarf with a hole cut in the top.

And of course, the Tilton piece makes it in my list. I don’t understand her style. I know there *have* to be people out there who love it. If you’re one of those folks, could you please explain it to me? Please?

B6177, Misses' Shirt

So now that I’ve gotten that out of my system 😉 Let’s go over the patterns I think I will be getting.

Butterick 6168 is on my shortlist.

B6168, Misses' Tunic and Dress

The more I look at this dress, the more I know it needs to get on my body. I love it – cinched waistiline, mock wrap front, cute little keyhole detailing – it’s great. And it looks like it’s probably relatively easy to stitch up.

While we’re on the topic of the Lisette designs, I’ll also be picking up 6182.

B6182, Misses' Top, Dress and Skirt

I also like 6183.

B6183, Misses' Top and Pants

I think it would be fun to do all three of these patterns in coordinating fabrics so that I could mix and match between them.

Butterick 6169 is the pattern I’ve been wanting. It’s also a Lisette, so there’s that, BUT it has a motorcycle-style jacket with it. Do you realize how long I’ve been looking for such a thing? I’m still really lusting after Vogue 2973.

V2973, Misses' Jacket and Pants

But…the motorcycle-style linen weight jacket from Lisette is great. In this month’s issue of Lucky magazine, an orange motorcycle jacket was featured. How fun would it be to work this jacket up in a terra cotta? B6169, Misses' Jacket and Dress

Love it. It’s perfect for spring.

I also really love Butterick 6185. It’s really cute, and it’s something I could just wear. It looks comfortable enough for working at home but nice enough for running to the store. Plus, polka dots. I mean, I know I don’t have to do the same fabric, but I’m obsessed with polka dots.  Enough said ;).B6185, Misses' Jacket, Top, Dress, Skirt and Pants

I also like Butterick 6164, but I think I have a pattern that’s very similar to this from Vogue – in fact, I know I do…but it has a straight skirt. I could probably franken-pattern this guy together with the top from the Vogue dress and something else…

B6164, Misses' Dress

I’m telling you, polka dots speak my language right now.

I rather like Butterick 6193. I’d love to see it made up on a curvy woman. I think it would be so fabulous.

B6163, Misses' Dress

I’m also LOVING the new Gertie pattern. How fun is Butterick 6167?

B6167, Misses' Dress

If I can work it out right, it might have to be my Easter dress. We’ll see how it goes. I have about 10 patterns that are contenders for that role. I’ll probably make this dress up anyway…because who can have too many dresses?

Finally, I’ll grab Butterick 6189. I have an obsession with aprons, particularly vintage-y ones.

B6189, Misses' Aprons

I think I saw some fabric that had pinup girls on it somewhere around the Internet. I think this would be a great pattern for that fabric. Something like these Alexander Henry prints would be fun:
Alexander Henry Phils Drive-In Bright FabricAlexander Henry Back in the Saddle Black FabricAlexander Henry Island Girls Blue Fabric

Because, you know, pinup girls.

Or perhaps some of the Michael Miller Edgar print
Michael Miller Edgar White Fabric

What did you like out of the new release? Which patterns will you be getting? I was kind of disappointed that there were so few that I liked/were not duplicates of older patterns that I already have.

  1. Oh my, that first Butterick ‘scrubs’ top is terrible! As is the orange tarp… what were they thinking!?! I love the keyhole dress (6168) and I’ve got a 1970’s skirt pattern with the front pleat just like 6182. I love it, super cute. Go the pin up girl apron, I’ve got a stash of apron patterns, I’ve made two of them, when I see them in the thrift store I can’t go past them. They’re easy to sew up and a great gift for friends.

    1. Isn’t it though? I keep trying to understand what they were thinking, but I just can’t!
I have a couple aprons, but I haven’t made one yet. I have a stash of patterns, I’ll pick this one up too. It’s too much fun.

  2. humm they look like waders to me lol! but I’m with you on those polka dots love the pants outfit! that would be so cute to wear to the Zoo this summer!

  3. I love, love, love polka dots, but I really don’t understand what they were thinking about the darts on the outside. Vogue has a similar look, so it must be an in thing, but it just isn’t for me. I did pick up 6168 yesterday because that keyhole neckline just cries out to be stitched!!!

So much of this release was blah! One pattern followed me home and that was it.

On the apron front, however, what girl doesn’t need an awesome pinup apron?
