I love tiramisu. So I thought, given the Italian theme behind our Valentine’s Day dinner, it would be an excellent dessert choice. Because I would be cooking everything else from scratch, I cheated and got a pre-made tiramisu cake.

Amarone is not a wine that should be paired with dessert. Because of this, I thought it would be nice to find a port or a dessert wine. While in the grocery store, we perused the dessert wine section and came across Quady Winery’s Elysium. We hadn’t tried a Black Muscat before, so we figured that it would be fun.

We wound up not having the Elysium on Valentine’s Day because we were so stuffed from dinner, and we didn’t have the cake. Instead, we saved it for dessert after our date the following night.

Wining husband poured the wine into our glasses and served the slices of cake.  On the nose, Elysium smelled of cranberries and pomegranates. Upon tasting, we found that it was sweet, and that the taste was true to the nose. The cake was delicious as a pairing with it. However, after the first glass, we found that the wine became very sweet. While a single glass with the dessert was great, the second glass was almost too much. This is definitely a dessert wine you would want only a small glass of before moving on to coffee or tea. It’s definitely worth drinking, just in moderation – as we should all be doing anyway.
